Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a unique experience; there are two gorilla tracking spots in Uganda namely Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is extraordinarily rugged; it has a unique tough terrain, steep and slippery slopes, large and flood-prone rivers and thick thorny vegetation, Bwindi is home to half of the world’s Great Apes. Mountain gorillas can be tracked in only three countries namely Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park), Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and DRC (Virunga National Park).
What are mountain gorillas?
Mountain gorillas are one of the rarest large mammal species in the world, their small and fragile population are found in a truly remarkable region of Arica – the western rim of the Great Rift Valley, where the watershed of the mighty Nile is separated from the Congo River, the two largest rivers of the continent, and the first and third largest rivers in the whole world. This highland region is characterized by both active and dormant volcanoes, some of which are capped with snow, the aptly named “impenetrable forest” in Uganda and misty Hagenia forests draped with dangling moss and twisted vines and orchids of the Virungas.
Reasons why you should trek mountain gorillas in Uganda
Rwanda's increment in the price of its gorilla permit from US$ 750 to US$ 1500 has also geared up mountain gorilla tourism in Uganda; mountain gorilla trekking permits in Uganda cost US$ 600 per person. Many tourists who want to pay US$ 1500 opt to book a gorilla habituation encounter in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where one can spend at least four hours with these giant apes. The increase in gorilla permits in Rwanda was meant to limit the number of tourists who want to trek mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
