Kibale National Park is awfully rich in primates, with 13 species recorded, the highest total for any Ugandan national park. Kibale forest is the most salient stronghold for chimpanzee, red colobus, but it supports eight other diurnal primate species: vervet, red-tailed monkey, L’Hoest’s and blue monkey, mangabey, black and white colobus, olive baboon, and chimpanzee, there are 4590 chimpanzees in Uganda, Kibale National is a habitat to approximately 1450 chimpanzees.
Reasons why you should trek chimps @ Kibale National Park
In Uganda, chimpanzee habituation is carried out at Kibale National Park also commonly known as the primates’ capital, located in Western Uganda, dominated by rainforest-interspersed with tracts of grassland and swamp. Spanning altitudes of 1100-1590m, Kibale boasts a floral composition transitional to typical eastern Afromontane and western lowland forest with more than 200 tree species recorded in total. Areas of mature forests are still liberally endowed with large buttressed mahoganies, tall fruit figs and other hardwood trees whose canopy is up to 60m above the ground.
Kibale National Park is the best Park in East Africa where chimpanzee habituation experience is carried out; chimpanzee habituation permits cost 200 USD per person-you spend the whole day with the chimpanzees while chimpanzee trekking permits cost 150 USD per person trekking chimps for one hour.
How to prepare for yourself for the trek
Chimpanzee habituation starts very early in the morning, you are advised to wake up very early to prepare yourself have breakfast, packed lunch and 2 bottles of drinking water, then our driver guide will drive you to the park headquarters at Kanyanchu visitors information center where you will meet fellow trekkers before you hit the jungle. Our driver-guide will accompany you and park ranger to the starting point of your chimpanzee habituation experience on their day to day activity. At the headquarters, our driver-guide will leave in the hands of your guide to be briefed about the rules and regulations before you set off into the jungle to see the mighty cousins. Chimpanzee habituation is an exciting activity-you will be able to see and stay with the chimpanzee the whole day as they play and feed, take colorful pictures and videos with our closest cousins.
