Reasons why you should track mountain gorillas from Rwanda to Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park both in Uganda are one of the best parks in the world one should visit. The park boasts of hosting half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the entire world with the rest being conserved in other parks like Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Initially, many clients preferred trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda than Uganda and this was because of the short 2-hour drive from Kigali to Volcanoes national park compared to the 8-hour drive from Entebbe/Kampala to Bwindi National Park.

Things changed in May 2017 when Rwanda Development Board in charge of selling gorilla permits doubled their price from USD 750 to USD 1500 on gorilla permits. Ever since this happened, so many clients nowadays prefer to track mountain gorillas in Bwindi national park because it’s cheap and some are not willing to pay huge sums of money for gorilla permits in Rwanda yet in Uganda a gorilla permits cost USD 700 per person.

Here are the following reasons why should track mountain gorillas from Rwanda to Uganda.

Clients save money

This is because it's cost-friendly. It’s cheaper starting from Kigali to Bwindi national park in terms of accommodation, car hire, and fuel among others. Starting from Kampala requires one to spend money on accommodation both on the day of arrival and the day of departure.

Secondly, when it comes to gorilla permits, gorilla permits in Uganda cost 700 dollars while that of Rwanda cost USD 1500 per person. This gives opportunities for clients to save some money for some other things.

bamboo tree gorillas.jpg

A short drive from Kigali to Bwindi national park

The distance between Kigali and Bwindi is about 176.8km and it takes about 4 to 5 hours from Kigali to Bwindi. They would have been 3 hours but because of the speed limit in Rwanda which doesn’t exceed 60 km/hr, it makes the drive time a bit longer but this reduces chances of road accidents since vehicles don’t move at a high speed.

Makes it possible to organize short trips for our clients with limited time

It’s possible for clients to arrive in Kigali and immediately transfer to Bwindi on the same day, do the tracking then travel back to Kigali on the second day for departure.

We recommend clients to stay in Bwindi for at least 3 days in order to enjoy the park to the maximum because it has a lot to offer like birds, primates, mountain biking around Bwindi which is done through a well-maintained trail of 13km from the park office.

Clients get a chance to see the natural beauty stretching from Rwanda to Uganda

On a drive from Kigali to Uganda, you pass through beautiful sceneries covered with both natural and artificial vegetation. Rivers flowing through the valleys are also observed during the drive, small towns along the road, farming among others. This spices up the same activity clients pay for which is gorilla tracking.

Clients get offers on flights when they book with Rwandair

Rwanda owns Rwandair and sometimes they give some offers through their website so it’s advisable to check on the prices and routes on their website before you book. You could end up saving some money.

Visit the Kigali genocide monument

It’s located in Kigali which makes it easy to access. Spend 2 hours at this monument which paints the dark history of Rwanda. Learn how the genocide started, what caused it and how it stopped. This will make you realize the good leadership of the current government has played a big role in the development of Rwanda.

The short distance between Kigali and Bwindi national park

It’s 176.8km from Kigali to Bwindi which takes 4 hours. It would have been 3 hours drive but because of the low-speed limit of Rwanda, a maximum speed limit of 60 km/hr while in Kigali-Huye and Butare. For more details about gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda kindly contact Adyeri Creations Limited.

Reasons why you should do gorilla tracking or habituation in Uganda

Uganda is one of the three countries on earth to host half of the world’s mountain gorillas in both Bwindi national park and Mgahinga national park meaning there are more chances for a tourist to see these gentle giants.

Affordable Gorilla permits

Interaction of tourists with mountain gorillas is designed to be done in two ways which include gorilla tracking and gorilla habituation. This depends on the amount of money a tourist is willing to spend and the amount of time meant to be spent on a trip. Gorilla permits for tracking costs 600 dollars while habituation costs 1,500 dollars. With gorilla tracking, you spend 1 hour with mountain gorillas compared to gorilla habituation where you spend 4 hours with our gentle cousins, that’s why charges for gorilla habituation are higher than for tracking.

gorillas in uganda.jpg

Five locations for gorilla tracking and one location for gorilla habituation

Interaction of visitors with mountain gorillas is done in 5 locations with four being located in Bwindi national park and the other in Mgahinga national park. These include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nyakagezi while gorilla habituation is done only in Rushaga.

These different locations have different habituated Gorilla groups for our visitors in order to meet the demand of our tourism market and also, manage the carrying capacity of the park since we are eco-friendly.

Uganda has the highest number of mountain gorillas

Uganda is one of the three countries on earth to host half of the world’s mountain gorillas in both Bwindi national park and Mgahinga national park meaning there are more chances for a tourist to see these gentle giants.

Availability of affordable accommodation facilities

These range from budget to luxury lodges with good quality services because of skilled and experienced workers employed in these lodges. Luxury lodges in Bwindi include Clouds mountain gorilla lodge, gorilla safari lodge, Sanctuary gorilla forest camp among others while budget lodges include Broadbill forest camp, Buhoma community forest camp, and Bwindi view bandas among others.

Hospitable people

Uganda has very welcoming and happy people with different cultures from different parts of the country. This will make you enjoy your trip to Uganda since you will feel comfortable and relaxed. The good hospitality can be witnessed through the service providers from the airport, tour guides, lodges among others so don’t worry about anything when you come to Uganda.

Experienced and skilled labor within the tourism industry

Investors in the tourism industry ensure that experienced and skilled labor is employed to ensure high quality and good service delivery. Different tourism bodies like Uganda wildlife authority train game rangers, guides among others. Uganda Hotel Owners Association also set standards for hotel owners within and around national parks to meet the required standards hence good service delivery.

Favorable climate

Uganda lies along the equator favoring the tourism industry in various ways. For example, the good climate supports farming which in return provides agricultural products to hotels and lodges within and around the Parks.

Uganda receives both dry and wet season. The dry season is the best for gorilla tracking and habituation for example from December to March and from June to October and this is because hiking becomes easy since the ground is not slippery as compared to the wet season.

Accommodation and gorilla permits rates are reduced during low season

This takes place from March to May and from October to November to attract tourists to book with them and also buy gorilla permits from Uganda wildlife authority respectively. This is an advantage to tourists who may not have enough money during the peak season.

Political stability within Uganda

With the leadership of the National Resistance Movement, the government has ensured peace and security within the country through fighting terrorism and peace talks with other countries like Sudan and Rwanda hence leading to economic development. Uganda is one of the safest countries in Africa especially if you are on Safari in our magical national parks.

Good transport system

The government of Uganda has improved on-road transport, through tarmac road networks linking to various parts of the country hence leading to reduced transport accidents and efficient movement of vehicles and other road users. The good transport system also saves time for travel since the roads are in good condition.

The government also constructed airstrips in various national parks of the country to improve on air transport and this has attracted private air transport service providers like Aerolink, Eagle Air among others to provide domestic and regional air services hence improving on the transport system. Kindly contact Adyeri Creations Limited for more information about Gorilla Safaris in Uganda.

Facts about Big 5 animals

Lions are the largest of the African cats, adults male weighs about 180 kilograms and a female about 130 kilograms and they live up to 20 years. The leopard is a shy predator that hunts mainly at night, they hide their prey from other predators in trees and are often seen resting in the branches of trees. African buffalo are the most abundant of the big 5 and occur in large herds that can number up to 700 animals. Deceptively docile these animals are aggressive and powerful, particularly the older bulls that have been rejected from the herd. African elephants live in tightly knit family herds, led by the matriarch, a fully grown elephant weighs up to 7 tones. Rhinos are classified as white and black, although there is no real color difference between the species. White rhinos are generally larger with a flattened mouth and they feed on grass. The name white arises from the Dutch word “wid” meaning wide.

Best National Park to see Cheetahs on your Uganda Wildlife Safari

Cheetahs prefer the open plain savannah, grassland and mountains landscape found in Pian Upe Game Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park, they prey on relatively small animals like antelopes, relying on the sight to locate, stalk and begin pursuits. They select vigilant animals on the edge of them as victims. Although Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land mammal, they cannot maintain their top speed of 65 m/h for more than about 300 meters, so unless they can get closer to their prey undetected before starting their chase, they are rarely successful.

When on safari in Uganda the Cheetah is on the top of many tourists’ wish list for the game drives in Uganda national parks and game reserves. The Cheetah is a lean and muscular cat, standing taller than a leopard but weighing only about half as much 88 – 132 pounds. Its round spots are dotted all over its body, not grouped in rosettes like a leopard’s, and it has a distinctive “tear stripe” running from the eye to jaw. Its silhouette is long and lanky. Unlike the rest of the cat family, the cheetah does not have retractable claws.

They are the most endangered of the three large cats perhaps because, unlike leopards, they are unable to adapt easily to the changes wrought to their habitat by humans, who are gradually forcing them into marginal areas to the remote Kidepo Valley National Park.

cheetah 3.jpg

Cheetahs are diurnal animals that prefer to hunt at dawn. They are generally silent, solitary animals except for consorting pairs and females with dependent offspring. Young animals that have just left their mothers tend to stay for a time, and males sometimes band together temporarily to defend a territory.

Males and females socialize only while the female is on heat. They select breeding areas that have a reasonable number of gazelles, with good hiding-place for cubs, perennial water and relatively low densities of possible cub predators. Males congregate in these areas hoping to mate with local females.

After a gestation period of three months, cheetah cubs are born blind, naked and helpless. Litter size varies from one to eight though few cats survive predators. Females hide them away for two to three weeks in dens, often in dense vegetation or rocks. Mothers hunt for food, leaving the cubs hiding, and periodically returning to suckle them. Every few days she moves her litter between dens. Although adults are not very vulnerable to predators, cheetah cubs are preyed on by hyenas, leopards, and lions.

Cubs may be born at any time of the year, but there is a peak which coincides with the appearance of gazelle fawns, which are easy prey for females.

Cheetahs prefer the open plain savannah, grassland and mountains landscape found in Pian Upe Game Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park, they prey on relatively small animals like antelopes, relying on the sight to locate, stalk and begin pursuits. Cheetahs use their forefeet to knock the running animals off balance, and then clamp tightly on its neck to strangle it. The dead prey will be dragged into cover, where the Cheetahs will feed. Females will call their cubs to the kill with a soft nap. Adults will not hunt again until about four days after a successful kill.

The best wildlife park to see Cheetahs in Uganda is the remote Kidepo Valley National Park and Pian Upe Game Reserve northeastern Uganda. Kindly contact Adyeri Creations Limited for more about big cats Safaris in East Africa.

Best Places to see Lions in Uganda

Kidepo valley national park lies between Uganda’s borders with Kenya and Southern Sudan, about 520 km from Kampala. Kidepo is arguably one of Africa’s most breathtaking wildernesses. Lions in Kidepo are bigger and heavier than lions at Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park because they feast on large herds of buffalos that roam in the Park.

A lion is considered by many as the king of the jungle, males develop thick manes on the neck and shoulders at about 2 years, short tawny coat, and a tufted tail. They live for 10-14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live longer than 20 years. Lions are the most sociable of all the big cats. They live in groups called prides, which consist of related females and their cubs.

The lion’s body is efficiently fashioned for the hunt. It has muscular legs -with the fore limbs designed for striking, seizing and gripping, while the hind legs are best suited for pouncing. The legs have enormous paws and retractile claws, with a dew claw that comes handy as a tooth pick. It has a powerful well-built jaw that opens wide to reveal 30 conical teeth. The canine teeth are remarkably long and pointed- up to 8 cm, enabling it to pierce and tear into flesh. The molars are for cutting and tenderizing chunks of meat.

Lions live in the savanna grasslands, shrubs and bushes obscure them and provide cover and camouflage. As lions are ambush hunters, they use this natural cover when stalking to creep as close as possible before making a final charge to catch their prey.
