Is Gorilla Trekking Worth the Money it Costs?
Gorilla trekking is an adventurous activity that involves going through difficulties through hiking but when you set your eyes on these gentle creatures, you don’t regret why you paid your money for the experience. In order to go for gorilla trekking, you should be physically fit because the activity involves hiking the muddy, slippery, wet, thorny bushes high altitudes of the mountains where these mountain gorillas stay, clients should also expect the use of much energy and discomfort since hiking is done in the tropical rain forests in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Volcanoes National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Virunga National Park. Clients should also expect to use a lot of energy and time when looking for these gentle giants. However, the load of work is reduced by the porters at the destination who are hired to carry some luggage for the clients so clients shouldn’t be worried about anything because the experience is worth it.
Yes, gorilla trekking is worth the money it costs. Gorilla trekking is the most expensive tourism product both in Uganda and Rwanda. This is mainly because these gentle creatures are very rare and can only be found in four national parks in three African countries like Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. National parks with mountain gorillas include Bwindi national park and Mgahinga in Uganda, Volcanoes in Rwanda then Virunga in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Costs of gorilla permits
Rwanda has the most expensive gorilla permits for both gorilla tracking and habituation which costs USD 1500 each followed by that of Uganda which costs USD 600 then lastly that of DR Congo costing USD 450. Gorilla permits in Congo cost less compared to other places because of low demand for gorilla permits and it’s because of civil conflicts and political fights. Sometimes rangers are kidnapped and killed within the Virunga National Park which scares away tourists from going there hence the high demand in Rwanda and Uganda.
Note; Gorilla permits still cost USD 600 for tracking and USD 1,500 for habituation but starting on 1st July, gorilla permit for gorilla tracking will cost USD 700 after Uganda Wildlife Authority decided to increase its price. This is because of the increased costs, Uganda Wildlife Authority is meeting in the conserving these gentle creatures and the habitat where they live.
Is gorilla tracking worth it?
Gorilla trekking is an adventurous activity that involves going through difficulties through hiking but when you set your eyes on these gentle creatures, you don’t regret why you paid your money for the experience. However, the load of work is reduced by the porters at the destination who are hired to carry some luggage for the clients so clients shouldn’t be worried about anything because the experience is worth it.
Here are the reasons as to why we convince our clients that gorilla trekking is worth the money it costs.
The social interaction of these mountain gorillas is amazing to see especially when they are all together as a family. These mountain gorillas are human-like in behavior. For example, they groom each other, feed their young ones, play with their baby gorillas, silverbacks protect their families since they are the leaders and protectors of their families. All sorts of interactions among the gorillas are amazing to see when you are close to them. Observing the mountain gorillas while interacting amongst themselves makes the experience worth the cost.
Secondly setting your eyes on a silverback/male gorilla is so amazing. This is because it’s physically different from the other family members like the mother gorillas and young ones. This is because it has a silver stripe on its back fur which it acquires when developing into adulthood. They are also big in size as compared to other family members.
In Uganda, 20% of the revenue generated from tourism is taken back to the communities neighboring these attractions, these funds are used to start up projects where community members can benefit from like jobs creation in the park environs, social services hence improving their standards of living and realizing the importance of these gentle creatures. In Rwanda, 10% is diverted back to communities neighboring these parks.
The rest of the revenue is used by the government to improve on the medical services, schools, improving on-road infrastructure among others. The reviews we get from our clients also convince us that the gorilla trekking experience is worth the cost because they are always positive.
The gorilla tracking and gorilla habituation are done under the guidance of knowledgeable, experienced and friendly trackers and rangers who provide all the information you would like to know about the experience and they welcome questions too from the participants of tracking. There is also an increase in the number of tourists coming to both Rwanda and Uganda for gorilla tracking and habituation even when the gorilla permits are expensive. This shows you that the experience is worth the cost.
Gorilla tracking and habituation require porters and local people to carry a backpack for the tourists going for gorilla experience and this provides them with jobs since they earn from the service they provide hence improved standards of living.
In conclusion, the one-hour interaction with the mountain gorillas starts from the time you set your eyes on a gorilla family and it’s designed for our clients to carefully observe the social interaction of these creatures, take photos, record videos and also enjoy the company of the mountain gorillas in their natural home.

Gorilla Babies Born in Buhoma Sector – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
We are excited to announce new babies in Mubare Gorilla Family in Buhoma sector – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park a few weeks ago, Karungi gave birth. Mother and the baby are healthy - the sex of the baby gorilla is not yet established. This is the second baby born in Mubare gorilla family Uganda’s oldest gorilla family within a period of 3 weeks. 2019 has been a great year for Uganda; we have continuously been blessed by births of the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which was declared a UNESCO Natural world heritage site in 1994.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the world’s popular mountain Gorilla destination, the highlight of a visit to Bwindi is a remarkable hour with the Giant Apes. Tracking Gorilla can last from a couple of hours to a whole day depending on how far the group has moved since it was observed nesting up the previous evening, Gorilla usually sleeps in their nest as soon as night falls and wakes in the morning before sunrise.
Mubare Mountain Gorilla Family
This was the very first mountain gorilla family to ever be habituated in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The family is named after the nearby Mubare hills and can be found in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi under the leadership of an alpha silverback called Kanyonyi. The habituation process for the Mubare mountain gorilla family started in October 1991 by the skillful Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) experts and ended two years later. At the time of its habituation, it was under the leadership of Ruhondeza who fathered a family of eighteen. Over its many years, it has suffered a number of misfortunes like raids by wild mountain gorilla families, kidnappings, deaths, and defections by some members which greatly reduced the group’s numbers. The group received one of its worst raids by a wild mountain gorilla family recently which injured and kidnapped most of its members. Ruhondeza tried to fight them off but because of his old age, he was over-powered. He, therefore, absconded deep into the forest because of the unbearable sadness in his heart. We are told that he died three months later in his sleep when he was above his fifties and his grave can be visited by tourists today. The five members who were deserted by Ruhondeza a few years ago have been increased to eight by the effortless contribution of their current alpha silverback called Kanyonyi.

Best time to trek mountain gorillas
The high season is June – September, and December to February. It’s hard to predict nowadays when the rainy season will be. Climate changes are making it difficult to forecast. Normally the long rainy season should be in March, April and the beginning of May and short rainy season in November. However, in the last 5 years, the short rainy season has been in early December. Gorilla tracking can be done throughout the year and the success rate of seeing them is the same. In the rainy season, the tracks in the rain forest might be a bit muddier and your tracking might be a bit longer and tougher because of that. However, it’s a rain forest, so the difference is not all that big compared to the dry season, especially in November.
How to book permits for Buhoma sector

There are two sessions to track Chimps in a day; morning and afternoon and tracking start at 7:00 am where the trackers meet at the information center then briefed and led by skilled ranger guide to search for the mighty giants in the forest. Chimps in Budongo can also be tracked by a person on a tour from or to Murchison falls it can be done as an add-on on the itinerary and the person has to be in good health with no cough, flu or any disease that can be transmitted to the Chimps.
When to visit
Chimpanzees in Budongo forest can be tracked any time of the year though the best time to the visit would be from May to August where the chance of viewing chimps is at 90%. In months; February, March, April, September and early October the chances are at 80%.
When it comes to months of Late October, November, December, and January chances are at 70% and hence viewing chimpanzees is difficult since trackers have to move long distances to find them. The reason is during that time there is a scarcity of food, shelter and maybe water in the nearest places; therefore they move to further areas to look for food.

This is because of the too much sun during this season which makes the vegetation dry hence favoring good observation and photo taking. Come enjoy Africa’s sun during the festive season.

UWA to increase Gorilla Trekking Permits
Gorilla trekking is an adventurous activity which involves going through difficulties through hiking but when you set your eyes on these gentle creatures, you don’t regret as to why you paid your money for the experience. In order to go for gorilla trekking, you should be physically fit because the activity involves hiking the high altitudes of the mountains where these mountain gorillas stay, visitors should also expect discomfort since hiking is done in the tropical rain forests in Bwindi, Volcanoes, Mgahinga and Virunga. Clients should also expect to use a lot of energy and time when looking for these gentle giants. However the load of work is reduced by the porters at the destination who are hired to carry some luggage for the clients so clients shouldn’t be worried about anything because the experience is worth it.
Gorilla trekking is worth the money it costs, it is the most expensive tourism product both in Uganda and Rwanda. This is mainly because these gentle creatures are very rare and can only be found in four national parks in three African countries like Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. National parks with mountain gorillas include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Gorilla permits still cost 600 dollars for tracking and 1,500 dollars for habituation but starting on 1st July 2020, gorilla trekking permit will cost 700 dollars per person after Uganda Wildlife Authority decided to increase its price. This is because of the increased costs Uganda Wildlife Authority is meeting in the conserving these gentle creatures and the habitat where they live.
Rwanda has the most expensive gorilla permit which costs 1500 dollars each followed by that of Uganda which costs 600 dollars then lastly that of DR Congo costing 450 dollars. Gorilla permits in Congo cost less compared to other places because of low demand for gorilla permits and it’s because of the civil conflicts and political fights. Sometimes rangers are kidnapped and killed in the Virunga national park which scares away tourists from going there hence the high demand in Rwanda and Uganda.

All sorts of interactions among the gorillas is amazing to see when you are close to them. Observing the mountain gorillas while interacting amongst themselves makes the experience worth the cost.
Secondly setting your eyes on a silverback/male gorilla is so amazing. This is because it’s physically different from the other family members like the mother gorillas and young ones. This is because it has a silver stripe on its back fur which it acquires when developing to adulthood. They are also big in size as compared to other family members.
In Uganda, 20% of the revenue generated from tourism is taken back to the communities neighboring these attractions which are used to start up projects where community members can benefit from like in terms of jobs creation, social services hence improving their standards of living and realizing the importance of these gentle creatures. In Uganda, 20% is diverted back to communities neighboring these parks. The rest of the revenue is used by the government to improve on the medical services, schools, improving on road infrastructure among others.
The reviews we get from our clients also convince us that the gorilla trekking experience is worth the cost because they are always positive. In conclusion, the one-hour interaction with the mountain gorillas starting from the time you set your eyes on a gorilla family and it’s designed for our clients to carefully observe the social interaction of these creatures, take photos, record videos and also enjoy the company of the mountain gorillas in their natural home.
